Reinventing the Future of the Media Business Together at the Local Media Summit 2026

As the Local Media Community network already aware, Indonesia's local media industry currently stands at a critical crossroads. Cuts to publication budgets and the "demise" of local government advertising have jolted media managers into realizing that reliance on government funding is no longer a sustainable business model.

To address these challenges and adapt to the evolving landscape, the annual Local Media Summit (LMS) will return to Jakarta. LMS 2026 is scheduled for October 22–23, 2026, at the Manhattan Hotel Jakarta, featuring the main theme: "Beyond Reach: From Discovery to Community, Trust, and Sustainability."

LMS 2026 aims to frame this period of efficiency drives and shifting digital landscapes not as an end, but as the starting point of a transition toward becoming "Beyond Media" entities. Local media outlets are encouraged to evolve—moving beyond the role of conventional news publishers to expand into areas such as local agencies, community managers, and financially viable regional event organizers.

"Limited capital and newsroom staffing necessitate that local media integrate into a broader ecosystem. This involves not only mainstream media but also Gen Z-focused outlets, 'homeless media' [platforms without a fixed home base], independent content creators, MSMEs, and local communities, all driven by innovation and collaboration or synergy," stated Suwarjono, Editor-in-Chief of Suara.com and one of the LMS initiators.

Over the two-day event, an estimated 150 to 200 participants—including media owners, editors-in-chief, multiplatform journalists, content creators, and other industry stakeholders—will engage in a series of conferences, talk shows, learning sessions, workshops, and coaching clinics.

The event is set to be opened by the Minister of Digital Communication and the Chairman of the Press Council, and will feature sessions that are engaging, relevant, and valuable for all participants. In short, the primary focus of LMS 2026 will cover several practical objectives, including: dissecting business models and alternative revenue streams ("Beyond Advertising"); discussing community management development ("Beyond Audience"); adapting to Generative Engine Optimization or GEO ("Beyond Search"); and addressing topics such as access to non-advertising grant funding, digital assets and safety, cross-regional content syndication, the rise of journalist-creators, innovative and inspiring revenue models, and more.

Speakers lined up for this year's LMS sessions—in addition to representatives from the Government and the Press Council—include figures from internet and social media platforms, advertising agencies, academia, technology and digital security experts, event organizers, and representatives from the corporate and private sectors. Also included are representatives from local media outlets recognized for their excellence or inspiring innovations, who will share their experiences.

Ultimately, the organizing team from Suara.com and IMS—who also manage the Local Media Community—hope that participants will return to their respective regions equipped with concrete business frameworks, digital technology proficiency, and solid collaborative networks. These elements are essential for surviving and thriving in a challenging era while paving the way toward the independence of local media across Indonesia.

About the Local Media Summit (LMS)

The Local Media Summit (LMS) has been Indonesia's largest annual gathering for local media managers since 2022. The forum aims to connect regional and small-scale media managers with key stakeholders in the national media ecosystem, fostering technological transformation, business sustainability, and enhanced journalistic quality at the local level.

This initiative, launched by Suara.com in partnership with International Media Support (IMS), is now entering its fifth year. To date, the LMS has served as a meeting point for local media managers, agencies, corporations, technology platforms, and donor institutions, all working to strengthen the regional information ecosystem in Indonesia. No fewer than 700 participants—representing local media, small-scale outlets, and platform-based media—have now networked through the Local Media Community.
